Eurasian Union

Yet another Union or Russia's attempt to rediscover Golden days of Societ USSR ?

The Eurasian Union is a proposal for Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and other post-Soviet states to deepen economic and political integration for these countries into a supranational union. The idea, based on the European Union's integration, was brought to attention in October 2011 by the Prime Minister of Russia, Vladimir Putin,but was first proposed as a concept by President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, during a 1994 speech at a Moscow university.

The agreement included the roadmap for the future integration and established the Eurasian Commission (modelled on the European Commission) and the Eurasian Economic Space, which both will start work from 1 January 2012

Why it is hitting headlines recently? Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia sign a cooperation agreement, setting a target of establishing the Eurasian Union by 2015

What is supranational Union: Supranationalism is a method of decision-making in multi-national political communities,wherein power is transferred or delegated to an authority by governments of member states.

Other important supranational unions: Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN): is a geo-political and economic organization of ten countries located in Southeast Asia, which was formed on 8 August 1967 by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. (note: India is not a member state of ASEAN.) The Arab League , officially called the League of Arab States , is a regional organisation of Arab states in North and Northeast Africa, and Southwest Asia (Middle East). European Union(EU): Present memeber states:27 Union of South American Nations: Again modeled on EU. Mainly the lAtin American countries united under this head to form Economic as well as defence ties.It is heading towrads single economic zone. Caribbean Community (CARICOM) :The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is an organisation of 15 Caribbean nations and dependencies. Pacific Union: proposed development of the Pacific Islands Forum, suggested in 2003 with potieal member states 16. North America Union (NAU) The North American Union (NAU) is a theoretical economic union. Loosely based on European Union.
